The failsafe way to run 5K

I always hated running. After a few minutes of setting off  I’d find myself gasping for breath, tomato-red, and on the verge of collapse. I tried everything, but nothing seemed to make the damn ordeal any easier. I finally gave up, concluding a) people who claimed to ‘enjoy’ this hell were lying or crazy, and b) running just wasn’t for me. And then I found the Couch to 5K Plan.

Couch to 5K is a free NHS plan that gets absolute beginners running for 30 minutes in just 9 weeks. The plan is delivered by structured podcasts that can be downloaded free to any MP3 player or iPod. All thats required is the motivation to complete 3 sessions per week, each lasting for half an hour and easing you into that 5K goal!

When I first started with the plan, I was incredibly sceptical that I’d ever run for 30 consecutive minutes. However, with surprising ease I managed to complete the final 5K, having dropped one and a half dress sizes, toned up, and fallen in love with the activity of my nightmares in the process. Now, I can run for hours, play so much more sport and actually enjoy exercise (yes, really). And I owe it all to Couch to 5k!

Not only did I succeed with the plan, my mother, auntie and many friends have also given it a go – and not one of them have failed yet. I know people who’ve never dreamt of running get to the end and be completely transformed (one even dropped from a Size 16 to a Size 12).
